All RD removable disk cartridges are interchangeable and preformatted. Archiving a set of PowerVault RD1000 disk enclosures takes up significantly less space than a similarly sized DVD or CD (the capacity of a single 1 TB removable disk cartridge is equivalent to more than 200 standard DVDs) while also saving bay space.

The PowerVaultTM RD1000 removable disk enclosure includes a Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive that is identical to Dell's use in the PowerVault Disk Storage portfolio, the PowerEdgeTM server family, and Dell PrecisionTM workstation external drives. SATA hard drive technology is a reliable industry storage standard and an ideal media technology for durability. Transfer files to the PowerVault RD1000 at roughly the same speed as a regular PC drive, up to 80 MB/sec.
